11 Year-old Harvey resident in critical condition, victim of gun violence
On the evening of Monday, September 23, an 11-year-old girl became the latest victim of gun violence in Chicago’s south suburban region.
The young girl was in her Harvey home, near 158th and Paulina streets, when she was shot in the head by a stray bullet.
The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. Monday. The victim’s family reported that she was sitting at a computer planning her 12th birthday party when she was struck by a stray bullet.
The victim was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center where she is in critical condition. Today, September 24, is her 12th birthday.
“Our hearts are heavy at the news of this latest act of violence against innocent residents of the City of Harvey,” said Mayor Christopher J. Clark. “As a community, we rally around our young resident and her family, offering our prayers and support for her full recovery.”
City of Harvey police is currently investigating the shooting. At this time, no one is in custody.
“As a police department, we are committed to giving our full attention to this crime against our young resident,” said Eddie Winters, Police Chief. “We are asking for the support of our residents.
Anyone who can provide information related to the shooting of this 12 year-old, please contact the police department immediately. All tips are anonymous and will be investigated,” continued Chief Winters.
Mayor Clark will host a birthday balloon release and prayer for the life of the victim, while addressing gun violence plaguing the south suburbs.
