Leving firm CLE to address strategies for litigating vs pro se parties
The Law Offices of Jeffery M. Leving Ltd. will host the next presentation of the Arthur S. Kallow Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Seminar Series on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m. CST at 19 S. LaSalle St. in Chicago.
Attorney Andrey B. Filipowicz of the Leving firm will be the keynote speaker, presenting on: “Litigating against an adverse party who is pro se.”
Pro se litigants are those who appear in court without a lawyer – a growing occurrence in family law.
“Judges may give them latitude that wouldn’t be afforded if they had counsel,” Filipowicz says.
“They may not hold them to the strict rules of evidence, they may give them leeway, grant multiple continuances and extensions of time, and even excuse missed deadlines, and this may cause the case to be more labor-intensive than if the party was represented by an attorney, because of the delays that can be allowed.”
Attorney Jeffery M. Leving, founder and president of the firm, who will facilitate the seminar, urges divorce and family law litigants not to go it alone. “Going to court pro se is something you might do if you contest a parking ticket,” he says.
“For a matter as important as divorce or child custody, a litigant needs strong and skilled legal representation. Unfortunately, pro se litigation, especially in family matters, is on the rise over the last 15 years. This can be a mistake in complex and life-changing cases, causing delays, and extending litigation in painful cases that might have been resolved earlier. Andrey will educate us on the best ways to represent our clients and their interests when we encounter adverse parties who are pro se.”
The presentations will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
The Kallow CLE Seminar Series, which began in 2014, provides legal education to family law attorneys and other professionals looking to expand their legal knowledge. CLE credit will be awarded.
Please make reservations by emailing Jennifer Whiteside (jwhiteside@levinglaw.com), as this program is close to its capacity.
