Orland Hills to host “Shred and E-Recycling Day” Saturday August 26, 2023
The Village of Orland Hills, Mayor Kyle Hastings, State Senator Michael Hastings and Orland Township Highway Commissioner Antonio Rubino are partnering to host a Free “Shred and E-Recycling” day for families to be held Saturday August 26, 2023.
With the abundance of aging computer equipment and technology, it has become more difficult for individuals and families to recycle their old and discarded computers and cell phones, while in today’s word of personal security, shredding important documents is more and more essential to protect individual and family privacy and security.
The “Shred and E-Recycling” day is intended to help reduce the abundance of discarded electronic technology and full destruction of important documents. There is a small fee for the disposal of television sets.
Mayor Hastings said that individuals can bring in their old computers, appliances, cell phones and large household appliances including dish washers, washers and dryers, microwaves, ovens/stoves, vacuums and toasters.
“These old devices end up accumulating in our homes, in our garages and in our storage and are difficult to dispose of individually,” Mayor Hastings said.
“This E-Recycling date is intended to help homeowners eliminate the clutter of broken and discarded electronic equipment and appliances.”
Rubino said that the disposal of technology and the proper destruction of important documents including copies of old bills which include personal data and information is important to families.
“We have arranged to have all of these items disposed of properly and more importantly to help residents protect their privacy and their personal information from falling into the wrong hands,” Rubino said.
“This is one of the most requested public services and we are glad that we have been able to organize this event for our community.”
Senator Hastings said that in addition to eliminating clutter and also destroying documents that if they fall into the wrong hands could expose families to identity theft, the E-Recycling program helps to protect the environment.
“This ‘Shred and E-Recycling Day’ event will help our community protect the environment by disposing of them in the proper manner,” Senator Hastings said.
“The proper destruction of personal documents, household bills and other important paperwork will help protect a family’s privacy and assets and their identity.”
Families can bring their items and documents to Kelly Park at 16553 Haven Avenue in Orland Hills on Saturday, August 26 between the hours of 12 noon and 2 PM.
The event is Free and open to the public. There is some restrictions on items that can be recycled to accommodate the public.
Shredding is limited to two boxes per household — please remove paper clips and other bindings from the documents. Shredding is limited to homeowners and not to commercial properties. Shredding will be accepted only until the shred trucks reach their maximum capacity, so please come early.
Electronic items are limited to computers, laptops, copiers, printers, scanners, home phones and cell phones.
A small fee is required for the disposal of TV monitors which is $25 for TV’s smaller than 21 inches and $35 for TVs larger than 21 inches.
Items not accepted include audio and video cassettes, household batteries, fluorescent lights, household cleaners, hazardous waste, large speaker boxes, light bulbs, plastic bags/containers and smoke detectors.
