Raymond Lopez says 500th Chicago murder unacceptable fir America’s 3rd largest city
Chicago homicides this year higher than New York City and Los Angeles with larger populations
Alderman Raymond Lopez (15th ward), candidate for Mayor of Chicago expressed outrage at the city reaching 500th homicide in Chicago so far this year. On Sunday, West Pullman resident Perry Anderson was gunned down as he left his mother’s home.
“It is unconscionable that we have reached the 500th death on the streets of Chicago. With all the fanfare and new crime prevention strategies being deployed by the Lightfoot administration every other week, homicide rate should be as low or lower than New York or Los Angeles by now.” said Lopez.
“How can cities like New York and Los Angeles that are larger in population tally less homicides than Chicago so far this year?” said Lopez. To date, New York City with a population of 8.8 million has tallied 299 homicides through Monday and Los Angeles with a population of 4 million has had 270 homicides as of September 3.
“It is not difficult to figure out that we may need to lean on our neighbors to the east and west to learn their strategies and implement them.” said Lopez.
“David Brown has admitted his focus is on the CTA and downtown. This is politically expedient for him, not for the people of our city as crime escalates in all our neighborhoods, when a young man can’t even visit his mother without getting shot. Give our transit system their own police and put Chicago Police officers where they belong protecting our communities.” said Lopez.
“Under this administration, victims are forgotten and often times ignored,” said Lopez.
“As Chicago’s next mayor, I will make the safety of every Chicagoan my person responsibility by ensuring the Police Department is lead by someone from within the department that understands and appreciates not only the officers but our diverse communities, support working through the consent decree quickly allowing officers to focus on problem-specific issues, and advocate for consequences on those repeat and often violent offenders causing much of the mayhem we see in our communities.”
