McLaughlin slams bill that undermines police

Former Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin, who is seeking re-election in April to replace beleaguered Mayor Keith Pekau, slammed a bill recently passed that would undermine the rights of police.

As Orland Park’s Mayor, McLaughlin was always a strong proponent of supporting a strong police force and hired Tim McCarthy, President Reagan’s former Secret Service agent who was injure din a 1985 assassination attempt, to he’d up the Orland Park Department. McCarthy retired last year.

McLaughlin was one of the first officials in Orland Park to speak out against the legislation.

Here is McLaughlin’s statement on the anti-police bill HB 3653 which was adopted by the Illinois Legislature on Thursday night.

“The One Orland team’s first priority is protecting our families, and part of that is consistent and strong support for our police (check our website, it’s the first priority we list).
“I do not support defunding our police, and our team will be there come April to make sure our police officers and law enforcement have the resources they need and that the community understands how those resources go toward protecting everyone in Orland.
“Anyone who says otherwise is using our police department as a political football instead of caring that residents have the facts.”
