Marie Newman launches very effective TV Ad Campaign

Marie Newman’s TV Ad campaign resonates with voters in Chicagoland’s 3rd Congressional District battle. Newman is facing-off with incumbent Dan Lipinski, who lacks the personal-touch personality that would normally save an incumbent from the election threats he faces every time he runs. Newman’s TV Ad resonates with voters emphasizing she is a product of the district, and she just might be able to pull this off

By Ray Hanania

Marie Newman, who is challenging Dan Lipinski for the second time in the 3rd Congressional District race, launched her TV Ad Campaign last week and the TV ad is getting great reviews from voters.

A day doesn’t go by that I don’t receive an email from readers of my columns (mainstream American and Middle East focused) applauding Newman’s effort to focus on positive news.

The critics assert the Ad “slams” Lipinski, but the truth is it is just one line criticizing Lipinski for failing to raise wages for working people and failing to support healthcare, which I don’t necessarily agree with. But, aside from that momentary criticism, the Ad offers a powerful profile of Newman describing her life effectively and succinctly and effectively.

The TV Campaign Ad reminds viewers why Newman is so popular and strong. Born in Little Company of Mary Hospital, baptized at St. Barnabas — a great parish in Chicago, by the way — raised in Chicago and in the suburbs Beverly and Palos.

The fact is Marie Newman is a Southwest Sider through and through and that means something to voters. She understands what the average person must go through to survive in a world drowned in political corruption and selfish political will.

The Ad speaks about her struggle as a regular person dealing with the problems that never seem to get addressed in our society. She scrubbed floors to pay her way through college and had to go without health insurance. Who doesn’t sympathize with that powerful image in today’s society?

Newman established her own business, a miracle in and of itself in this economy despite being a good economy. It’s not easy to build a business.

She presents herself well and attendees at a recent campaign appearance at the Arab American Democratic Club only re-emphasized how effective her message is not just to Arab Americans but to all of the ethnic groups in the 3rd Congressional District that feel abandoned and ignored by Congressman Lipinski.

Dan Lipinski is a good person, but he is not his father. His style often comes across unfriendly and he doesn’t know how to socialize, an asset that was the foundation of his father who he succeeded by appointment in 2005.

Newman came within 2,200 votes of unseating Lipinski in the March 2018 Democratic Primary during the Democratic voter surge. The 3rd District is predominantly conservative Democratic, or as we call the voters there, “Reagan Democrats.” Newman has failed to appeal to that voter constituency and she has surrounded herself mostly with far left liberals who often seem to be inconsiderate of the district’s mainstream centrist identity.

Still, Newman knows how to appeal to voters and connect with them better than Lipinski.

The only question is how many votes will independent candidate Rush Darwish take from her, and can she still survive with Rush in the race. If Rush were to step down, Newman would be a certain winner. But that’s a crown Darwish will have to wear after the election is over.

Both Lipinski and Newman are racking up endorsements, with Newman winning the endorsement of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. That should help. But what would help is if Newman were to moderate her liberalism enough to embrace the majority of the district’s Centrist voters. It’s OK to be a liberal. It’s OK to be a conservative. It’s not OK to be too far to the Left or too far to the Right. The center is where progress is achieved.
