Orland Park Cardiologist warns of rising cardiovascular risk among women
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women says Board Certified Cardiologist from Orland Park Dr. Kathleen Drinan who will speak to “Women and Heart Disease Prevention” at the Annual Convention and Scientific Sessions of the American College of Osteopathic Internists in Florida.
One in three women die from Cardiovascular disease, which is more than the numbers of women who die from all cancer-related deaths, Drinan says.
Drinan will detail the progress she has made during the past 20 years in her own practice in Orland Park, a suburb of Chicago, by treating women earlier and subsequently reducing cardiovascular mortality, and she will present additional information on novel gender-specific cardiovascular risks, including pre-eclampsia, vasculitis, and cardio oncology.
Drinan, who will review the recent history of women and heart disease and the continued challenge of early identification and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women, will also call for additional research on women with heart disease and increased representation of women in CV research studies.
The annual convention of Osteopathic Internists hosts more than 1500 attendees as they participate in continuing medical education, and Dr. Drinan plans to provide updated information on the prevention of cardiovascular disease in women.
Thirty years ago, a respected cardiologist, Dr. Nanette Wenger, described “bikini medicine” and noted that women were only being evaluated and treated for the bikini defined areas and not being treated for their overall cardiovascular health. Dr. Drinan hopes medicine can move beyond the “bikini” when dealing with women patients and continue to recognize and treat women earlier for cardiovascular disease prevention.
Kathleen Drinan DO, FACC, FACOI is a practicing board-certified cardiologist in Orland Park, Illinois and is committed to the prevention and early treatment of cardiovascular disease. She is a Fellow in the American College of Osteopathic Internists and American College of Cardiology.
Drinan has attained Diplomat status in the National Board of Echocardiography and is a Clinical Lipid Specialist with the American Board of Clinical Lipidology. Dr. Drinan is on the medical staffs of Advocate Christ, Palos and Silver Cross Hospitals.
