The following is the statement of the County Executive in celebration of National Hispanic American Heritage Month:
“During National Hispanic American Heritage Month, we celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of American citizens with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. During this time, we recognize a fundamental truth: Hispanic Heritage is American Heritage. Whether their ancestors who have been here for generations or if they are among some of the newest citizens, they represent a rich history of country and culture, each adding their own contributions and dynamic perspective to our country.
“This month, we honor the contributions of Hispanic Americans, but we must also acknowledge how generations of people who’ve been treated as disposable through deportation raids and anti-immigration policy that failed to recognize their humanity, much less their contributions to our society.
“Milwaukee County includes our brothers and sisters in the Hispanic American community in its vision to achieve racial equity and become the healthiest county in the state. Our vision is committed to truly honoring the Hispanic American community each day by recognizing their humanity and working to reverse the failures of the past that have left too many residents left behind.”
