Cook County Board of Review Opens 2026 Property Tax Appeal Season on Monday, July 27

Chicago, IL – Tuesday, July 21, 2026 – The Cook County Board of Review (CCBOR) will officially open the 2026 property tax appeal season on Monday, July 27, providing homeowners, businesses, and property owners across Cook County the opportunity to appeal their property assessments.

Property owners may file an appeal online through the Board of Review’s website at cookcountyboardofreview.com during their township’s designated filing period.

Appeals may also be filed by attorneys or tax representatives acting on behalf of property owners.

There is never a fee for filing an appeal.

“The Board of Review is committed to providing every property owner with a fair, transparent, and accessible appeal process,” said the Cook County Board of Review Commissioners in a joint statement.

“We encourage property owners to review their assessments carefully and file an appeal if they believe their property’s assessed value does not accurately reflect market conditions or contains factual errors.” For tax year 2025, the BOR processed a record 290,533 appeals.

The Board of Review serves as the second level of appeal in the Cook County property tax assessment process, independently reviewing decisions made by the Cook County Assessor’s Office. The Board considers evidence submitted by property owners, including information regarding comparable properties, market value, property characteristics, and other relevant documentation.

The 2026 appeal season follows another year of historically high filing volumes. Tax year 2025 underscored the continued importance of ensuring taxpayers have access to an independent and impartial review of their assessments. The Board of Review provides checks and balances regarding the Assessor’s work.

Throughout the appeal season, the Board will publish township on its website opening and closing dates, filing instructions, educational resources, and answers to frequently asked questions. Property owners are encouraged to monitor the filing calendar closely, as appeals must be submitted before their township’s filing deadline.

The Board of Review also offers a variety of free resources to assist taxpayers, including:

● Information sessions conducted throughout Cook County
