D230 Board, staff to present at statewide education conference
A team of six Consolidated High School District 230 Board members, administrators and teachers will be presenting a workshop, while a trio of board members and administrators host a round table at the Illinois Association of School Boards Joint Annual conference this weekend.
The conference is a training event for school board members, administrators, and business officials.
The workshop team is composed of Board Vice President Melissa Gracias, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Kim Dryier, Stagg High School Associate Principal of Student Services Dr. Ian Macleod, Sandburg High School Associate Principal Brian Klene, Stagg High School Social Studies Teacher Pete Krason, and Sandburg High School Special Services Teacher Michelle Hoven.
The Team will be presenting a workshop, entitled Supporting Students with Trauma Informed Practices. Attendees will learn how District 230 is training staff to support students as students emerge from a global pandemic.
The lasting impacts of the pandemic require the systemic support of their schools to meet their social and emotional needs.
Dryier says, “We hope participants walk away with a basic understanding of what trauma informed practices are and what they are not, why they are important in a school setting and what trauma informed practices look like in a classroom setting. The presentation will also highlight the Board’s role in implementing and supporting trauma informed practices”
District 230 began investigating Trauma Informed Practices before the pandemic as a way to strengthen social and emotional supports in order to meet the District’s Social Emotional Learning goal.
To date, approximately 120 staff members are involved in the training cohort and another 450 staff members have been involved in some form of other professional development.
The D230 panelists include two board members and Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Katie McMillan, who will discuss recruiting and retaining school board candidates.
Attracting and retaining school board members with a shared vision and commitment to the district’s success is a hallmark of D230.
Veteran school board members will share their pipeline to attract committee members who continue their commitment as school board members providing stability for governance.
