Orland Township places Term Limits referendum on upcoming April 6 ballot

Orland Township sends Term Limits Referendum to Cook County Clerk, Positioning the Question Before Voters in the April 6 Consolidated Election. Orland Park Voters in November Showed Overwhelming Support for Term Limits

Responding to a clear directive from local voters, Orland Township filed a term limits ballot question with the Cook County clerk’s office to position the question before voters in the April 6 election.

The referendum is a product of an Orland Township Board of Trustees directive in December. At that time, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve both a binding referendum to be placed on the April 6 consolidated election ballot and a companion Township ordinance embodying the proposal.

If voters in the consolidated election adopt the term limits proposition, then no person serving in the office of Orland Township supervisor, trustee, clerk, assessor or highway commissioner will be permitted to serve more than three full four-year terms in the same office after the April 6 election.

“Voters in Orland Park made clear their desire to see term limits on local elected officials,” Orland Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady said Friday. “We heard those residents loud and clear.”

In the November general election, 88.79 percent of Orland Park voters favored term limits for Village of Orland Park elected officials. Consistent with the Township’s proposal approved Tuesday, Orland Park elected officials will be limited to three full four-year terms.

“Our job as elected officials is to serve our community by providing quality services, events and programs to meet residents’ needs and enhance their quality of life,” Supervisor O’Grady said. “When our constituents speak, we listen.”

Orland Township serves the communities of Orland Park, Tinley Park, and Orland Hills, as well as the unincorporated areas within these boundaries.
