No injuries reported at Orland Park retail store fire

A fire was reported at the Old Navy retailer store at 105 Orland Park Place Drive inside the Orland Park Place Mall on Sunday night at around 5:30 pm that caused significant fire and smoke damage to the store.

Fire officials said more than 30 people including employees and customers were in the store at the time of the fire outbreak, but emphasized that everyone was evacuated safely and there were no injuries.

A Box Alarm was called because of the size of the building and the nature of the extensive threat of the fire. The Orland Fire Protection District dispatched a full response team including 2 fire trucks, 4 fire engines, 4 ambulances, who were assisted by fire crews from several neighboring fire departments including Tinley Park, Oak Forest, Mokena, Crestwood and Palos Heights.

Fire Chief Michael Schofield credited the quick notification and response by the Orland Fire Protection District, and the store’s sprinkler system with preventing the fire from spreading faster and becoming an even greater threat to the public.

Officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation. The store suffered fire, smoke and water damage, officials said.
