Reverend to challenge Congressman Bobby Rush as independent
Longtime Congressman Bobby Rush criticized for failing to represent district, failing to defend against increasing violence, and failing to provide leadership
Reverend Anthony Williams will challenge incumbent Congressman Bobby Rush in the upcoming race for the First Congressional District. Reverend Williams will make his formal announcement on Saturday.
In making his decision to run, Rev. Williams says, “It has become clear to most voters in the district, that Bobby Rush has been in office too long and has done too little for the voters he represents.”
Rev. Williams has dubbed his challenge as the “Power To The People” campaign. Rev. Williams has already received the endorsement of the Illinois Green Party, which is prepared to assist in a massive effort to gather the 16,700 voter signatures needed to qualify him for the November ballot.
Rev. Williams, who recently lost a son to gun violence, says he will make gun violence a key issue of his campaign. According to Rev. Williams, “Widespread gun violence is not only a threat to our communities, it also is a threat to national security.”
