Matrimonial Lawyer returns for CLE presentation at Leving firm on litigating vs. pro se parties
The Law Offices of Jeffery M. Leving Ltd. will host the next presentation of the Arthur S. Kallow Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Seminar Series on Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. CDT at 19 S. LaSalle St. in Chicago.
Attorney Andrey B. Filipowicz of the Leving firm will be the keynote speaker. He previously presented an outstanding lecture at the Kallow CLE Seminar Series on overcoming a client’s common misconceptions of the law.
This time, Filipowicz will speak on: “Litigating against an adverse party who is pro se.” Pro se litigants are those who appear in court without a lawyer – a growing occurrence in family law.
Filipowicz says courts may have patience with pro se litigants that they probably wouldn’t if they were represented by counsel. “Rules of evidence may not be strictly enforced, and judges may tolerate occasional missed deadlines or grant continuances, which may make the case more labor-intensive,” he says.
Attorney Jeffery M. Leving, founder and president of the firm, who will facilitate the seminar, says Filipowicz is an outstanding litigator and appellate lawyer who has decades of experience in areas that are crucial to gaining favorable results for his clients.
On this topic, Leving urges divorce and family law litigants not to go it alone. “I would expect to see pro se litigants defending against parking-tickets,” he says. “It is disturbing to me that litigants are appearing pro se in greater numbers for matters as important as divorce or child custody. I think it can be mistake. These litigants need skilled, experienced attorneys at their side in these life-changing cases. Andrey will instruct us on best practices to represent our clients and their interests when we encounter adverse parties who are pro se.”
The presentations will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
The Kallow CLE Seminar Series, which began in 2014, provides legal education to family law attorneys and other professionals looking to expand their legal knowledge. CLE credit will be awarded.
Please make reservations by emailing Jennifer Whiteside (jwhiteside@levinglaw.com), as this program is close to its capacity.
