Lyons approves sidewalks plan

Residents split cost with village for improvements

By Steve Metsch

The Lyons Village Board recently approved a contract for this year’s 50/50 sidewalk replacement program.

At its meeting on Oct. 17, the village board approved a $53,575 contract with Schroeder & Schroeder, Inc., of Skokie.

“We are continuing to do the 50/50 sidewalk program with residents, property owners and businesses,” Mayor Christopher Getty said. “They pay $100 and the village picks up the other half. It averages about $200 for each square.”

About 400 sidewalk squares are being replaced along with 100 linear feet of curb and gutter, Getty said.

“The low bidder was Schroeder & Schroeder. They have worked with the village in the past and we are happy to approve this at this time,” Getty said.

The board approved paying $83,482 to MYS, Inc., based in Palos Heights, for a parking lot at the northeast corner of Collins and Joliet avenues. That’s the site of the former firehouse, which was demolished in July to make room for the parking lot.

The old firehouse was used for storage the past decade or so, Getty said. “They’re a qualified contractor and we’ve worked with them in the past. We are looking to push this project into 2018,” Getty said.

The board amended and extended a contract with Kurtz Paramedic Service for an amount to not exceed $430,470.

“They’ve been managing our paramedics, who work on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” Getty said. “They’ve done exceptional service and we’d like to continue to contract with them.”

Village Manager Tom Sheahan said the amended agreement represents an increase of about 2 percent.

The village board also approved an agreement with Denton Cartage Co., Inc., 7735 W. 47th St., which offers the company a Class 6b tax reduction, the mayor said.

“We do get a little less in taxes for the village, but we see it as a positive, that we’re retaining that business in our community. We’re not losing them to, let’s say, a collar county that may have lower taxes. We’re happy to assist this long-term business,” Getty said.

Denton Cartage is unusual in the regard that it also sits in neighboring McCook, which had to sign off on the tax plan.

According to the company’s web site, Lowell Denton Sr. founded Denton Cartage in 1972 with one truck. The company now has three locations in the Chicago area and is a full-service intermodal carrier, the web site said.

The village board next meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7.
