Community residents host “Black Friday Action” protest against Chase Bank funding go gas and oil projects

About 60 people gathered in Evanston to urge Chase to stop being the #1 funder of new gas and oil projects. Chase has invested $317 Billion in fossil fuel projects since 2015 – 33% more than any other bank.

A crowd of all ages gathered and sang protest songs at Independence Park led by Margaret Nelson. The crowd then marched to Chase Bank where customers attempted to present a letter to the branch manager for the CEO Jamie Dimon.

Two Chase preferred customers entered the bank with a group of children, however they were not allowed to meet with the branch manager. Employees told the group to leave or they would call the police, and locked the door.

Activists continued to speak and chant outside for a few more minutes as reporters interviewed participants, and the group dispersed peacefully.

Watch a video of the event here and see photos and more video clips on the Chicago Against Line 3 facebook page!

Next Steps

  1. If you are a customer of Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, or Citibank, please sign this letter urging them to divest from funding fossil fuels! The national group’s goal is 10,000 signature. https://stmp.link/evanston

  2. Would you like to deliver a letter to your local Chase branch, or move your money? We are forming a support group to help Chicagoans Move Our Money to Stop The Money Pipeline that’s funding planetary destruction! Sign up here.

  3. Write an online review to tell Chase: Stop using our money to destroy our planet and our lives. Fund a sustainable future.

  4. We will continue to lobby from all sides. Do you have any bank connections who would speak with us about strategy? Are you part of any groups that would like to have a speaker about how to move your money to stop funding climate change? What gets you energized about saving the planet? Let’s connect!
