Illinois Secretary of State Candidate, David Moore, Offers A Solution to Carjacking Crisis

Carjackings in Illinois are at an epidemic level. People are afraid in every part of the state. The number of carjackings in 2021 has exceeded 2020, leading the Illinois State Police to announce earlier this year that it’s partnering with federal and local law enforcement agencies to form a Joint Carjacking Taskforce. Candidate David Moore offers a solution

As a candidate for secretary of state, I am the only person advocating for Illinois to adopt digital license plates to replace the current metal ones that haven’t changed in more than a century. In the wake of the current spike of carjackings the need for digital license plates is urgent. Law enforcement needs every tool available to deter carjackings, which is a crime of opportunity.

The DLP platform can turn any motor vehicle into a billboard capable of notifying police and the public of a “stolen car,” Amber Alert or Silver Alert. It also can send a location notification to the owner to help recover stolen vehicles.

DLPs use the same networks to communicate as a cellular phone. Currently, they are legal throughout the U.S., but California, Arizona and Michigan have passed legislation for use on all motor vehicles. As secretary of state, I will join the list of states moving into the 21^st century. Additionally, DLPs make the time consuming process of registration, renewal and titling a thing of the past.

While law enforcement struggles to stop carjackings, DLPs will help Illinois drivers close the gap between the time a carjacking happens and police respond by alerting everyone within eyeshot. As secretary of state, I will continue to look at innovate ways to build on Jesse White’s legacy by modernizing the office and improving customer service and safety.
