Advantage: Bridgeview police

Nip firefighters in basketball game for charity

By Steve Metsch

Bridgeview Fire Chief Mike Daly, Police Chief Ricardo Mancha, and the village trustees had fun at the last village board meeting talking about the recent “Battle of the Badges” basketball game played between the police and fire departments.

The police won by two points, leading Trustee Michael Pticek to deadpan: “Needless to say, the fire department got hosed.”

Trustee Mary Sutton congratulated the police for their victory, saying the police led the whole way.

“They won by one basket, and we didn’t have as many men,” Trustee Patricia Higginson countered. “I’m sticking up for my fire department. Go, fire.”

Police officers who participated were Chris Pell, Tom Steinz, Moawiah Bages, Obaida Sahloul, Mike McGuire, Ed Sullivan, Pedro Gonzales, and Corey Flagg; firefighters were Mark Toczek, Ryan Slaughter, Nick Lipinski, Craig Cipriani, and Jason Yerkovich. (Supplied photo)

The game was played April 28 before a full house at the Bridgeview Park District to raise money for the Bridgeview Chamber of Commerce’s scholarship program, said Sabrije Sabanoski, the chamber’s executive director.

“Thank you to our community heroes for participating in our Battle of the Badges fundraiser. The fundraiser was a huge success and the support and donations will go a long way in helping the chamber’s future initiatives for the business and residential community,” said Sabrije Sabanoski, Executive Director

Free hot dogs and burgers were provided by Prairie Materials, she said.

A raffle winner claimed a suite for 16 with appetizers and beverages at an upcoming Chicago Fire soccer game, courtesy Mayor Steve Landek, Sabanoski said.
