Lisa Hernandez to Serve as Deputy Majority Leader, Continuing Fight for South Suburban Communities
State Rep. Elizabeth ‘Lisa’ Hernandez, D-Cicero, will continue in her new term as Deputy Majority Leader, fighting for south suburban communities in upcoming budget and legislative talks. Hernandez issued the following statement:
“I am honored to serve my community as Deputy Majority Leader in the House and lifting up our voices in Springfield. It wasn’t too long ago that Cicero, Stickney and our suburban communities were ravaged by torrential storms and record flooding, displacing thousands of families. Dedicating myself to delivering needed federal relief dollars and helping people return to safe, rebuilt homes were my top priorities. And on those, I delivered.
“As Deputy Majority Leader, it has been and continues to be my first responsibility to look out for and protect all vulnerable communities, not just my own. We have a lot more work to do on this front, but I am joined by dedicated leaders in the House Democratic Caucus who are as committed to tackling the challenges ahead of us as I am.
“We must continue to invest in our small business corridors, because our competitiveness is built on them and everyday workers. Tackling the high cost of housing and a shrinking supply for first-time homebuyers will be a heavy lift, but nothing we can’t overcome. And lastly, we must rededicate ourselves to delivering economic relief for families burdened by high childcare and everyday expenses, creating an Illinois fit to raise a family and start a future in.
“I am ready to tackle these challenges. Let’s get to work.”
Hernandez was first elected as State Representative in 2006.
