President Dominick, Town Board organize drive to help families impacted by Friday’s fire

More than 14 families were forced to leave their homes when the 18-unit apartment building where they lived was destroyed by a massive fire on Friday Dec. 1, 2023.

The Cicero Fire Department fought the blaze which lasted more than five hours, searching through the three-story building at 59th block of 16th Street to ensure everyone had escaped unharmed.

The Town of Cicero and the Red Cross worked together to find shelter for all the families involved and to also provide funds to cover temporary housing costs.

Town President Larry Dominick announced on Saturday that he is grateful that no one was injured during the fire but urged the community to “come together” to help the families with donations of clothing and other items to salvage their holidays.

“The people or Cicero are a very generous and giving family, and I am asking everyone to help these families by making donations of new clothing and even home small appliances that can help them as they recover from this terrible tragedy,” President Dominick said Saturday.

“The Town is also donating funds to each family to help them. This is a terrible tragedy for any family to experience just before the Christmas holidays, and they need our support.”

President Dominick said residents who want to help should to bring their donations to the Public Safety Office building at 5410 W. 34th Street this week, beginning Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 PM and 4 PM.

President Dominick said he is grateful to both State Senator Mike Porfirio and State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid for also offering to help and raise awareness for the donation drive.

“When the community is in need, President Dominick and the Town of Cicero always step up to the plate to help and I am proud to do what I can to also help urging the public to help these families,” said Senator Porfirio, adding he is making a donation to help the families.

“The worst thing is to lose everything, your home, your possessions and especially right now before the holidays. Like President Dominick, I am very proud of the First Responders who responded and prevent any loss of life.”

Representative Rashid said, “My heart goes out to the families impacted by this tragic fire. My office will do everything possible to help them get back on their feet. I look forward to partnering with the Town of Cicero to ensure these families get the support they need.”

Dominick said that the donation drive will also be supported by the Town’s Clergy Committee and Chairman Ismael Vargas.
