Cicero Board honors Health Commissioner Sue Grazzini

The Town of Cicero Board of Trustees on Tuesday honored Health Commissioner Sue Grazzini for “effective supervision of the Health Department” since her appointment in 2012.

In a resolution applauding Grazzini, Town President Larry Dominick and the Trustees recognized Grazzini’s experience, and also the successful efforts of the Health Department’s entire team including the medical staff, administrators, employees and volunteers.

The recognition comes in the wake of two years of battling the COVID pandemic offering vaccinations, providing medical assistance, food distribution, and COVID testing. More than 169,000 people have been tested in Cicero since the pandemic began nearly two years ago.

“I want to thank Sue Grazzini for the vast amount of services that the Cicero Health Department offers to the community. The amount of health benefits our citizens receive is absolutely incredible, for families, for children, for seniors, for all of our residents,” Town President Larry Dominick said.

“People in the health and medical field have a very dangerous job responding to the deadly COVID virus. We have seen all kinds of people being infected and losing their lives to the COVID virus. There is a lot of confusing information being given to people from our Federal and State government but Sue and our Health Department have helped to sort through it all and ensure that our citizens are the best protected int he state.”

President Dominick thanked all of the Health Department’s employees and medical staff, too, crediting them all with the Health Department’s successes.

Grazzini, who has had 37 years of professional service in public health, is a graduate of Morton College Nursing. She began her career as a clinic nurse, perinatal nurse and school nurse before serving as Nursing Supervisor for 26 years at the Berwyn Health District. Grazzini has worked as a floor nurse on a medical/surgical neuro floor at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

“The Cicero Health Department is one of the first in the State of Illinois to offer COVID-19 immunizations. We were immunizing 500 to 600 per day and last Thursday, we administered 585 COVID vaccinations,” Grazzini told board members.

“Our community has come together as a family and everyone has worked together. That was very evident during his pandemic. All fo the departments and citizens pitched in when needed. Groceries and prescriptions were delivered to families that were quarantined or in isolation. Seniors were given rides to and from immunization sites. Cicero nurses with the Fire Department made home visits to immunize the homebound.”

Grazzini also praised the staff she works with. Each received a bouquet of flowers as an expression of the Town’s gratitude for their hard work.

President Dominick and Cicero Senior Center Director Diana Dominick also thanked Cicero Director of Health Management Vanessa Parrish, BHSM, for outstanding efforts to improve the health department, providing leadership and direction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A graduate of Loyola University, Parrish recruited proper medical personnel, updated equipment, preparing the clinic to be ready with vaccines and Covid-19 testing for the residents of Cicero.

“With Vanessa’s efforts, our residents can now utilize a website and App to access Health Department services and make COVID appointments online,” President Dominick said.

Parrish also assists the Senior Center in organizing vaccinations programs and COVID-19 testing for the seniors of Cicero, the most vulnerable residents.

“The Cicero Health Department has achieved so much under Sue Grazzini’s leadership and we are very proud of that,” said Collector and Trustee Fran Reitz who introduced the Resolution.

“They have done so much not just to help protect our residents from the COVID pandemic but in also providing a wide range of services that most other communities do not offer. I am very proud of the wide range of health services we provide to our residents.”
Cicero Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias called the wide range of health services offered to Cicero residents “impressive and amazing.”

“All of you, from the nurses and medical staff to the administrators, have done an amazing job working with Health Commissioner Sue Grazzini. You make us all very proud,” Punzo-Arias said.

In addition to Grazzini and Parrish, the Cicero Board also thanked the hard work of the Health Department’s medical personnel, staff and volunteers. They include Medical Provider Jessica Setlak, Dentist Saema Qadri, Dental hygienist Kenia Ugalde, Nursing Supervisor Laura Rubio, registered nurses Suzanne Paulucci, Marissa Buscemi and Esperanza Diaz, Dental coordinator and Office Manager Marisol Escabi, Dental Assistants Jocelyn Nava and Franceslyn Cordova, front desk receptionists Karina Osorio, Lesley Sumeracki and Jennika Jimenez, and staff members Anthony Solano, Mia Hayes and Lupe Heredia.
