Cicero arrests two suspects involved in 21 carjackings and burglaries
Teenage Suspects involved in burglaries and car jackings in six suburban communities in Berwyn, River Forest, Central Stickney, Elmwood Park and Oak Lawn
The Cicero Police Department (CPD) announce the arrests of Luis D. Mercado-Cordero, male, age 18, of Maywood, Illinois and Samuel A. Sierra, male, age 18, of Melrose Park, Illinois for robberies and burglaries in six communities who were targeting liquor stores and gas stations.
On May 6, 2021 through May 19, 2021, the CPD began investigating three Robberies and one report of a burglary involving multiple suspects and a Chrysler Sebring. As Detectives continued their investigation, they learned the following communities were also investigating similar robberies; Berwyn, River Forest, Central Stickney, Elmwood Park and Oak Lawn.
On May 19, 2021, an off duty CPD Detective familiar with the investigation observed the vehicle on Cicero Avenue in Chicago. He immediately contacted the Chicago Police Department for assistance as he followed the vehicle into a gas station.

As he awaited the arrival of Chicago Police the suspects had walked into the gas station, but appeared alarmed by him as he sat in his vehicle observing. They exited the gas station and reentered the Chrysler driving north on Cicero Avenue.
Chicago Police arrived and were quickly directed by the Detective to 47th Street and Cicero Avenue where two suspects were in the commission of a vehicular hijacking. The CPD Detective exited his vehicle apprehending one suspect and the Chicago Police, after a brief foot pursuit apprehended a second suspect. The Chrysler fled the scene with two occupants.
An extensive and thorough multi-jurisdictional investigation was conducted by the following law enforcement agencies; CPD, Cook County Sheriff (CCSPD), Berwyn, River Forest, Elmwood Park and Oak Lawn Police Departments. Mercado-Cordero and Sierra were subsequently identified in connection to these various crimes.

The Cook County State’s Attorney Office reviewed the investigation and approved the following charges for Mercado-Cordero investigation; Cicero – Armed Robbery (3 counts), Vehicular Hijacking and Burglary, Berwyn – Aggravated Robbery and Burglary, Central Stickney (CCSPD) – Aggravated Robbery, River Forest – Armed Robbery, Elmwood Park – Robbery, Oak Lawn – Burglary. The following charges were approved for the Sierra investigation; Cicero – Armed Robbery and Vehicular Hijacking, Berwyn – Aggravated Robbery, Central Stickney (CCSPD) – Aggravated Robbery. Sierra has various charges pending due to being a juvenile offender during the commission of these crimes.
The investigation is still ongoing and anyone who may have information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact the CPD.
