Marie Newman sworn in as Congresswoman for 3rd District

Congresswoman Newman becomes first woman in history to represent Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District

Marie Newman (IL-03) was sworn in as Congresswoman to the 117th Congress proudly representing Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, which covers the Southwest Side of Chicago as well as its surrounding suburbs. A lifelong advocate for strengthening transportation and infrastructure, protecting unions, growing small businesses, protecting health care rights and building a greener economy, Congresswoman Newman made history today by becoming the first woman to represent Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.

“I am deeply honored to represent the hundreds of thousands of residents on Chicago’s Southwest Side and suburbs as we all collectively fight for a more just nation and an economy that works for everyone,” said Congresswoman Newman.

“The 117th Congress has more women —and more women of color — than any time in American history. I couldn’t be prouder to be among this inspiring group of colleagues, each of us are only going to continue making history from here.”

Congresswoman Newman will serve on the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, Congressional Labor Caucus, House Democratic Manufacturing Working Group and Democratic Women’s Caucus. Additionally, she will serve as the Vice Chair of Communications for the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), helping shape national messaging and campaigns on progressive policies surrounding universal health care, tackling the climate crisis and ensuring families receive the real relief they need to survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

“From the Midway International Airport to the thousands of acres of intermodal railyard that carry hundreds of thousands of commuters each and every day, Illinois’ 3rd District is home to a world-class public transportation system. As Congresswoman, strengthening local transportation will be at the top of my legislative agenda so that Illinois residents and riders can receive the accessible, reliable and affordable transportation they deserve,” said Congresswoman Newman. “On top of that, we will continue to fight for progressive policies that not only truly invest in our future but will help build good-paying jobs, a fairer economy, a more affordable health care system and equitable country for all Americans.”
