McCarthy Statement on Recent Police-Involved Shooting

Former Chicago Police Superintendent and Candidate for Mayor of Chicago Garry McCarthy issued this statement on rising violence in the City of Chicago:

“These kinds of shooting incidents are a tragedy. As a city, we all lose when they occur. I offer my condolence to the victim’s family. At first blush, this shooting appears to be justified, based on what we see in that video and I’m pleased with its quick release. We are hoping that a thorough investigation gives us the truth as to what happened.

“But let us also be clear, that the shooting victim refused to comply with the officers. He appears to reach for a gun. At that point, he leaves the officers with little to no choice but to shoot in defense of their own lives.

“Incidents like this underscore the need for a new mayor who can bring us together, promote understanding and open dialogue.”

Who is Garry McCarthy?

Chicago Mayoral candidate and former Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.

Garry grew up in the Bronx and graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School, a Catholic high school. He earned his undergraduate degree from State University of New York Albany where he played on both the football and baseball teams.

After graduating in 1981, Garry realized his lifelong dream and became a policeman – wearing the same shield number as his father – #14573.

In 2000, he was named Deputy Commissioner for Operations of the New York City Police Department where he directed the operational command center at Ground Zero during the attacks on 9/11. In 2006, Mayor (and now Senator) Cory Booker recruited Garry to lead the entire police department of Newark, New Jersey.

Based on his history of reducing crime at every stop in his career, Garry was named as Superintendent of Police for the City of Chicago in 2011. During his tenure, crime dropped to levels not seen since the 1960’s.

Over the last months, Garry has been approached by hundreds of Chicagoans who want change brought to their city and believe that he’s the right person to be our next Mayor.  Garry is running because he believes for us to have real change, we must unite all Chicagoans around the causes of restoring transparency and fairness to government, developing a real plan to make us safe again, revitalizing our schools and stopping the school closings. That’s his mission.

Garry has 3 wonderful children and lives in Chicago with his wife Kristin and their son.
