Township of Lyons approves grants

Little League, Argo High, La Grange Pet Parade among beneficiaries

By Steve Metsch

The latest meeting of the Township of Lyons saw several sponsorships and grants being awarded by the board.

Each of the following was approved by unanimous 5-0 votes.

The township approved a $650 sponsorship with the Lyons Township Little League. “We’ve supported it in the past and will continue to offer our support,” township supervisor Christopher Getty said at the board’s Feb. 13 meeting.

The board also approved an $800 grant request from La Grange Pet Parade Charities, the organization that presents the annual parade. This year’s parade begins at 9:30 a.m. June 2 in downtown La Grange.

The board approved renewal of the township’s one-year membership in the Countryside Chamber of Commerce. The renewal cost is $200.

New this year is the approval of $1,000 in funding to the Argo Higher Education Foundation for the group’s annual fundraiser set for March 2, Getty said.

“We haven’t done this in the past, but we feel it’s appropriate that we offer them some financial support,” Getty said of the foundation that helps students at Argo Community High School in Summit.

The board also approved a grant request of $5,000 from Aging Care Connections, 111 W. Harris Ave., La Grange, for the Congregate Meals Program.

Getty said the organization initially requested $25,000, scaled that to $10,000, and agreed to $5,000. “We asked them to lower it. I thought $5,000 was more appropriate,” Getty said.

According to the website, the Congregate Meals Program serves adults age 60 and older with a lunchtime meal served Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. at Salerno’s Pizzeria and Sports Bar, 9301 W. 63rd St., Hodgkins.

Seniors are asked to make a suggested $2 donation for their meal, according to the Aging Care Connections website.

In other business, township trustee Mike Profirio said that mental health first aid training had been given to School District 105 staff in Lyons on Jan. 29. Training sessions are set for the Brookfield police on March 16, and the Countryside police on April 10.

Getty thanked the township’s highway department for its plowing of roads during the snowy weekend of Feb. 9-11. Joe Betz, of the highway department, told the board that the township’s four plows were busy for about 16 hours during the storm on Feb. 9.

The township board next meets on March 13 at 6 p.m.
