Orland Park Police Implement New Orland Park Neighborhood Watch Program
Community encouraged to voluntarily register cameras to assist in crime prevention efforts
The Orland Park Police Department recently unveiled its new Orland Park Neighborhood Watch program.
The program is an opportunity for citizens to assist in crime prevention and identification of those responsible for crimes committed in Orland Park by registering outdoor home monitoring cameras with the Village.
“This program is great because we are utilizing resources that already exist in the community,” said Orland Park Police Chief Joe Mitchell.
“So many residents and business owners have approached us to ask how they can help. This is a great way to partner with the Orland Park Police Department by utilizing cameras to deter and combat local crime.”
Residents and business owners can register their camera as a voluntary option for possible footage recovery in the Orland Park Neighborhood Watch program.
Should a crime occur in the area of their home or business, a local law enforcement officer will contact the Orland Park Neighborhood Watch registrant and request to view footage from the time and date of the incident.
Following a crime, police officers often go door-to-door to seek footage from neighbors. This process is time consuming and can delay the apprehension of the criminal at large. With the new program, footage can be shared immediately by the residents or business owner by electronic means, expediting the process.
The Orland Park Neighborhood Watch program would allow law enforcement to ascertain who has cameras in the area, contact the registrant to obtain this vital information and move forward with their investigation in a timely manner.
Registration is completely voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time. The Police Department will not have direct access to cameras, nor are registrants obligated to provide video, if asked.
“The Orland Park community has always been helpful in assisting with crime prevention by reporting suspicious activity, making sure their property is secure and by continuously partnering with the police department in an effort to maintain a safe environment,” said Mitchell. “This is just another way to help.”
