Benefits and services for Veterans and Military are readily available

The Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs (IDVA) operates 49 offices in Illinois offering 27 services for Veterans including five Veteran programs in cooperation with the Secretary of State. All services are available online at www.illinois.gov/veterans. All public libraries in Illinois, Veterans Administration Offices and IDVA offices have service officers available and computers available along with basic instruction. In the northeast quadrant of Illinois there are 9 offices in Cook County; 2 in DuPage County; 3 in Kane County and add the Student Veteran offices at most colleges and universities. Benefits and service are readily available.

Just over 50% of Illinois Veterans are not taking advantage of the services and benefits that are available. In several critical issues, homelessness, health situations, physical and mental assistance, family support and employment, both preparation and placement are readily available from the VA and the private sector. There is a brochure available at all State Veterans field offices, County offices and various cooperating agencies.

The Cook County and DuPage County offices have a registration office for Veterans to obtain a local discount Veterans card. You will need your DD 214 to register. Nothing else is accepted. While you are at the County office you can securely register your DD 214 to protect your ID from loss, or misplaced placed at a time when needed. Also keep in mind if you are desire a military presence at your memorial service, the DD 214 is the only ID accepted or the VA DD 214 medical card.

Veterans services available through the offices of the Cook County Recorder of Deeds

The Cook County discount card is honored at over 100 restaurants and other small businesses. For a full list go to CookRecorder.com/militarydiscount. You will received, at no cost, a card with your picture and ID number. It’s easy to use. The other counties in Illinois (DuPage) similar have about the same procedures.

If you are retired Military and had some instruction experience, there are instruction positions available at most JROTC Cadet Units at high schools. For more information [email protected] I do not do the hiring but will just pass along your name and contact information.

JROTC in Chicago will hold a summer camp at St. John Military academy in spring. Applications will be accepted in February.

If you know any of the younger Veterans or Military encourage them to join a Veterans organization. The invitation is extended to reserve, National Guard of all branches and many Post have associate members who want to support the Post’s efforts. Many Posts have an accommodation for younger Vets as to their work and family schedule.
