Orland Fire District reports several 4th of July fires but no injuries

Orland Park, IL — Officials of the Orland Fire Protection District reported on Saturday that there were eight minor fires due to the use of fireworks but no injuries during the 4th of July holiday Friday.

Interim Fire Chief John Purtill said that OFPD Fire Fighters responded to eight incidents involving fires on Friday, July 4th, that included grass and prairie fires, and fires in trash cans and dumpsters.

One outdoor home deck also sustained fire damage as a result of private home fireworks displays, Purtill said, but that no one was injured in the fire incidents.

“Official July 4th celebrations have ended, and we’re pleased to report that despite numerous emergency calls, no one was injured during the celebration of 4th of July activities,” Purtill said Saturday.

“We continue to urge caution and to avoid the use of personal fireworks in order to avoid any injuries. Stay safe.”

Under State of Illinois laws, all consumer fireworks are considered illegal. This includes popular items like firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, and other items that explode or produce a visible or audible effect when ignited.

The State laws restricting fireworks do not include novelty items such as Sparklers and “smoke bombs,” although misuse can cause injury and burns.
