Northwood Esports wins Rocket League World Championship
Sunday’s victory caps the Grand Slam of Collegiate Rocket League events
Northwood University’s Esports Team on Sunday won the Collegiate Rocket League World Championship in Dallas, Texas.
“This victory is something these students will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Esports Coach Cody Elsen. “I am so very proud of the hard work and determination that they showed. What an unbelievable moment for Northwood University.”
Northwood had early victories against Salford University (England) 3-0 and St Clair College (Canada) 3-0, and quickly advanced to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Northwood defeated UNLV (USA) and then ValleyField College (Quebec) 4-2 to advance to the grand finals.
In the grand finals, Northwood faced a familiar foe in Stockton University (USA). The Timberwolves got straight to work and swept the series 4-0 earning the world championship title.
“We just simply trust each other and once you have that, you become the best team possible,” said Captain Hunter Woitas (LionBlaze).
Woitas, of San Tan Valley, Arizona, competed for Northwood Esports along with Stephen Hoelbinger of West Deptford, New Jersey, and Alexander Che, of San Antonio, Texas.
This victory completes the Grand Slam of College Rocket League events for Northwood University this year. Northwood won the Collegiate Rocket League Summer Series Championship, Collegiate Rocket League National Championship, Collegiate Rocket League North American Championship and now the first-ever Collegiate Rocket League World Championship.
