Ald. Quinn reinforces commitment to improving Public Safety, supporting Chicago Police

Ald. Marty Quinn (13) today reinforced his commitment to improving public safety and supporting the Chicago Police Department (CPD) by building on the many public safety initiatives he pursued in 2021.

Over the past year, Quinn has been a strong advocate of Chicago police officers and finding solutions to support both residents and police officers from rising crime.

With many CPD officers retiring or choosing other careers, Quinn is committed to ensuring police feel supported while streets remain safe.

“Police districts across Chicago are starved for more police support as gun violence continues its spread into our communities,” Quinn said.

“I worry about the well-being of our police officers as well as the safety of our neighborhoods. While there isn’t one solution, I am committed to finding ways that our police are fully supported and our communities are safe.”

Quinn continued, “It is no secret that I’m a strong champion for the many police officers that live, work and raise families in the 13th Ward. Their sacrifices are immense. Without new recruits trained to take the places of officers who are reaching retirement age, we will be facing a shortfall of officers that the city, our communities and families cannot afford.”

In 2021, Quinn took action:

  • Continued to collaborate with CPD to crack down on drag racing on Pulaksi Road from 47th to 79th Streets;
  • Sponsored a resolution recognizing CPD Officer Kevin Sellers for his courage and dedication to protecting the Clearing/Garfield Ridge neighborhood;
  • Requested Mayor Lightfoot reconsider the vaccine mandate for city workers in an effort to keep police officers on the job and our streets safe;
  • Pushed back on the city’s 2021 budget because it cut police funding by $33 million;
  • Voted against the 2021 budget because of his concerns about the cuts to police funding and increasing property taxes on residents struggling with the pandemic;
  • Co-sponsored the ordinance to hold a special meeting to discuss police strategy before the 4th of July holiday, a notorious weekend for increased crime and violence;
  • Called for 2,000 additional police officers in the 13th Ward at the special City Council meeting on July 2;
  • Supported bringing in the National Guard during the civil unrest in May and June 2020;
  • Voted against numerous city settlements in support of the police;
  • Attended weekly prayer vigils and dinners for 8th District police;
  • Continued to ensure regular and efficient removal of graffiti in the community; and
  • Kept the local community updated on his positions via social media.

Quinn will continue his vocal advocacy for the police and improved public safety in 2022.
