Glen Ellyn Man Sentenced to 50 Years for 2011 Murder and Criminal Sexual Assault of His Ex-Wife

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that a former Glen Ellyn man has been sentenced to fifty years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for the 2011 murder and sexual assault of his ex-wife, Nancy Bustos.

On February 27, 2020, following a seven-day-long trial and approximately three hours of deliberations, a jury found Juan M. Granados, 43 (d.o.b. 01/03/1978) guilty of one count of First-Degree Murder and one count of Criminal Sexual Assault. Late yesterday afternoon, Judge Brian Telander sentenced Granados to forty years in the IDOC for the murder and ten years in the IDOC for the criminal sexual assault. The sentences will be served consecutively.

On October 16, 2011, at approximately 1:34 p.m., officers with the Glen Ellyn Police Department conducted a well-being check of Bustos at the apartment she shared with Granados and their two children. Once inside the apartment, officers discovered Bustos’ lifeless body in the bathroom. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death. An investigation into the murder led by the Glen Ellyn Police Department led authorities to Granados as the killer.

The investigation revealed that at some point in time during the evening of October 15, Granados and Bustos were in the apartment together when an altercation ensued between the two resulting in the sexual assault and murder of Bustos. After strangling Bustos to death, Granados fled the country for Mexico, where he remained until his extradition in the fall of 2017. On September 17, 2017, Granados appeared in Bond Court where Judge Brian Telander ordered he be held without bond. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

“Ten years ago, Juan Granados brutally sexually assaulted and murdered Nancy Bustos, his former wife and mother of their children,” Berlin said. “After strangling Nancy to death, Mr. Granados fled the country in an attempt to avoid the consequences of his actions. Thanks to the dogged efforts of the Glen Ellyn Police Department however, Mr. Granados was brought back to DuPage County to face justice. While the sentence imposed on Mr. Granados cannot bring Nancy back to her children and those who loved her, it is my sincerest hope that they may find solace in knowing that the man responsible for her death has been held responsible. I thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Jennifer Lindt, Bethany Jackson and Alexandria Levan for their efforts in holding Mr. Granados responsible for the murder of Nancy Bustos.”

Granados will be required to serve 100% of the murder sentence and 85% of the Sexual Assault sentence before being eligible for parole. He will receive credit for time served in the DuPage County Jail.
