Fire causes serious damage to Orland Home, residents safe
Landscapers alerted a woman and three children to a fire that ravaged their attached garage and was quickly spreading to their home on Saturday afternoon on the 14200 Block of Woodward Drive in Orland Park. The 911 call was made around 2:24 PM.
Firefighters with the Orland Fire Protection District arrived on the scene to find the garage of the two story single family residence consumed by fire that was quickly speaking to the inside of the home.
Multiple fire crews that arrived were able to quickly contain and prevent the fire from spreading. A full still alarm was called to provide additional manpower and equipment to the scene and to assist Orland Fire stations. The fire had gutted the garage, destroyed a vehicle parked in the garage and caused serious damage to the home.
The family fled through the front door but was unaware of the fire until they had been alerted to the flames by the landscapers whose fast action in reporting the fire and calling 911 may have saved their lives. They were all able to escape the fire without injury. The family was evaluated by fire personnel on the scene.
The home is currently uninhabitable at this time. The residents will stay with relatives for the immediate future.
Orland Fire Investigators said that the cause of the fire was debris that had been thrown out by the family that had been burning. The family has doused the debris with water and put it in a plastic bag. The debris reignited causing the fire, the Orland Fire District Investigation Team said.
Other fire departments providing coverage and manpower including from Tinley Park, Crestwood, Palos fire District, North Palos, Palos Heights, Lemont, Homer fires.
