Orland Park Village Board Approves First-of-Its-Kind Amazon Retail Store at 159th Street and LaGrange Road
Orland Park Village Board Approves First-of-Its-Kind Amazon Retail Store at 159th Street and LaGrange
At its January 19, 2026 meeting, the Orland Park Village Board approved a first-of-its-kind Amazon retail store at the southwest corner of 159th Street and LaGrange Road, the long-vacant site of the former Petey’s II restaurant.
Amazon’s planned brick-and-mortar retail store in Orland Park includes a one-story building of approximately 230,000 square feet offering groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise.
The store would function similarly to a large-format retailer such as a Walmart Supercenter.
This is a commercial retail store open to the public, not a warehouse or distribution center.

The plan was reviewed and approved by the Orland Park Plan Commission at its January 6, 2026, meeting and was reviewed and approved by the Board of Trustees at its January 19, 2026, meeting. The Village is not providing any financial incentives to Amazon as part of this project.
“When a global retailer of this scale considers investment in Orland Park, it sends a strong signal about the vitality of our community and the strategic importance of this corridor,” said Orland Park Mayor Jim Dodge. “It demonstrates that Orland Park continues to be viewed as a premier destination for major commercial investment.”
Amazon’s proposed multi-million-dollar investment in Orland Park would generate millions in sales and property tax revenue. This new revenue will be used to fund critical Village infrastructure improvements designed to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance safety. Absent this new revenue, the Village would not have the funding capacity to make these traffic improvements due to previous spending priorities and debt commitments the new Village Board is now working to address.
In addition to long-term economic benefits, this project will also create significant employment opportunities for our community. The construction phase is expected to generate approximately 200 jobs, followed by an estimated 500 permanent positions once the store is operational. Amazon has also expressed a strong commitment to utilizing local labor throughout the construction process, a commitment reinforced by the presence and support of local union representatives who spoke in favor of the project at the Village Board meeting. Many of these skilled workers live right here in Orland Park and the surrounding area, meaning this development will directly support local families, strengthen our workforce, and reinvest back into Orland Park.
“This type of investment supports not only our local economy but also well-paying jobs during construction and beyond,” Dodge said.
Village officials emphasized that this approved project is not a fulfillment center, warehouse, or distribution hub. It is a commercial retail store open to the public. The one-story building is comparable in size to other large-format retail stores in the area, including the Orland Hills Walmart Supercenter. The proposed Amazon store would include seven loading docks, compared to six at the Orland Hills Walmart Supercenter. By contrast, Amazon’s fulfillment center in Matteson spans approximately 3 million square feet, includes 67 loading docks and provides parking for 375 semi-trailers. The approved zoning and Special Use Permit for this site specifically prohibit warehouse or distribution uses.
“This is a prime location, and we are encouraged to see it moving forward as a full commercial redevelopment,” said Dodge. “Projects like this generate substantial sales tax revenue that directly benefits residents while strengthening one of our most important commercial corridors.”
The millions in new sales and property tax revenue generated by the project will help fund Village infrastructure to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and increase safety including the following infrastructure improvements:
- Extension of Ravinia Avenue to LaGrange Road.
- Installation of traffic signals at 161st Streetand LaGrange Road.
- Dual left turn lanes from northbound LaGrange onto Ravinia Avenue (161st Street).
- Extension of dual left turn lanes from eastbound 159th Street onto LaGrange Road including closure of the median across from Lake View Plaza.
- Addition of deceleration lanes on 159th Street and La Grange Road and an acceleration lane on LaGrange Road.
- Potential burial of utility lines along 159th Street from LaGrange Road to west of Costco.
“The traffic issues and corresponding solutions have been known for many years,” Dodge said. “Because of previous spending priorities and previous debt commitments that this new Village Board is now working to address, the Village would not have been able to fund these improvements without the new revenue generated by Amazon’s retail store.”
The planned Amazon retail store followed the same established, transparent, and legally required review process that applies to all commercial planned development proposals in Orland Park, including public Plan Commission review, traffic and engineering analysis, environmental and infrastructure evaluation, and multiple opportunities for public input. All steps have been followed thoroughly and in accordance with established procedures.
“This is about smart commercial growth that pays for itself, improves traffic movement, and positions this corridor for long-term success,” Dodge said. “Our focus remains on what is best for Orland Park and the community we serve.”
The project timeline includes:
- End of 2026 – Completion of Ravinia Avenue extension to LaGrange Road.
- End of 2026 – Completion of Costco fuel station project and associated Ravinia Avenue roundabout.
- 2027 – Amazon retail store opens.
- Looking ahead – Additional out lot development.
