Commissioner Aguilar Gives Update on His Work to Support Victims of July Floods in Cook County’s 16th District

Cook County Commissioner Frank Aguilar has requested Governor Pritzker to issue a Disaster Proclamation and will continue to propose legislation to support those affected by floods

After the severe storms and subsequent flooding that hit multiple 16th district communities, Commissioner Aguilar has undertaken several measures to bring support to constituents facing hardships.

In the immediate aftermath of the storms that occurred on July 25th to July 28th, Commissioner Aguilar contacted Cook County’s Interim Director of Emergency Management and Regional Security Angela Gilkes and the leadership of affected towns to deploy safety equipment and immediate response teams.

Commissioner Aguilar is grateful for the efforts of first responders, both from Cook County and our local 16th District municipalities, who worked so diligently to ensure residents, their homes, and streets were cleared of debris and restored to safety.

“Flooding has been a top priority of mine since I became your County Commissioner. It has been a constant topic when I meet with 16th District mayors, community organizations, and other elected officials. I also have brought this issue up to the Cook County Board of Commissioners and have requested additional aid and investments whenever possible,” said Commissioner Aguilar.

“I want to thank the tireless work of our first responders, local elected officials, and emergency response teams from Cook County and the State of Illinois. Their immediate efforts to maintain safety for our residents and diligent work to document all damages to ensure that we are getting the resources needed to rebuild in the present and protect against flooding in the future.”

Commissioner Aguilar also wrote three letters to Governor J.B. Pritzker, urging him to issue a Disaster Proclamation for the Village of Summit, the Village of Forest View, and the 23rd Ward of Chicago, all 16th District communities who faced major damages from these storms.

This request is aimed to increase the amount of funding available for our communities to repair infrastructure damages, and further aid so constituents can repair damages to their homes suffered by the storm.

Commissioner Aguilar and his office will continue to keep residents updated on all information pertinent to flood recovery.
