Kids camp teaches young children basics of fire safety

Orland Fire Protection District, IL – Several dozen young campers received training in basic fire safety and life-saving skills at the Orland Fire Protection District’s annual summer Fire and Life Safety Camp held at the district’s training center on 163rd Place in Orland Park.

Children ages 8 through 12 participated in the Fire & Life Safety Camp Monday, June 15, 2026, an educational and interactive program designed to teach important safety skills while providing a fun and memorable experience.

The Fire & Life Safety Camp is designed to provide hands-on learning experiences that help children develop confidence, awareness, and practical safety knowledge.

“The mission of the camp is to educate children on a variety of topics to help keep them safe at home, at school, and in their communities,” said Community Risk Reduction Education Betsy Dine who supervises the camps each year.

“One of the most exciting highlights of the camp was the opportunity for campers to operate a real fire hose and spray water just like firefighters.  Participants also toured an ambulance, explored emergency equipment, and learned how paramedics respond to medical emergencies.”

Throughout the day, campers learned about medication safety, concussion awareness, lithium-ion battery safety, fire prevention, CPR, AED use, first aid, emergency medical services, and how to properly call 911.

Campers practiced what information dispatchers need, how to remain calm, and the importance of staying on the line until instructed to hang up.

The campers were treated with a special visit from the Cook County Sheriff’s Officer Christine who introduced the campers to Darwin, the county’s Search and Rescue K-9.

“Campers had a chance to meet Darwin and learn about his specialized training, and see how they assist in locating missing persons and supporting emergency response efforts,” Dine said.

“By engaging directly with firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers, and safety professionals, campers gain valuable skills and a better understanding of the important role first responders play in protecting the community.”

The camp continues to be a successful community program, combining education and fun while helping prepare the next generation to make safe and informed decisions.

The knowledge and experiences gained throughout the day will help campers become safer, more confident, and better prepared to respond appropriately in an emergency.
