Serafin Power Poll shows anxiety over state economy, the issue that drove presidential election

Monthly “Serafin Power Poll” puts finger on the issues driving elections, politics and public perceptions. Latest polls shows it was and is the economy, but how do influencers feel about it all.

By Ray Hanania

Political guru and veteran media consultant Thom Serafin released his most recent “Serafin Power Poll” following the recent presidential election that offers some insight into why people voted the way they did, returning the unpredictable former President Donald Trump to office and seeing Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign surprisingly  returning worse than expected.

Launched in 2020, the Serafin Power Poll is an interactive polling platform that surveys business, civic, media and political insiders to produce valuable insight into what some of the Chicago region’s most influential citizens think about pressing civic issues.

While it’s not a scientific poll, it is a fascinating, non-partisan and strictly anonymous glimpse into the attitudes and opinions of those individuals who essentially run the city.

But the Serafin Power Poll provides a deep insight into how much of the region’s smartest people think about elections, politics, and the issues that drive our future.

The November Serafin Power Poll addressed six questions on the state’s economy, the city’s budget deficit, the presidential election and holiday shopping.

More than 46 percent of respondents believe the recent election will negatively impact Illinois’ economic health. And that’s not good news because Illinois ranks among the worst when it comes to taxation but better when it comes to other issues. Gov. J.B. Pritzker should be paying attention to the poll because it could impact the very foundation he may have to rely on if he plans to run for president in four years.

Only about 15 percent of respondents say they expect a positive outcome, and another 15 percent remain uncertain.

Not surprisingly, the Serafin Power Poll showed that the primary issue that drove voter election decisions and concerns was the economy. It far outweighed every other issue identified by nearly 79 percent of respondents. Immigration was only 13.48 percent, followed by disappointment in Harris. But The issue of abortion and the Middle East were almost insignificant in driving the election, according to the Serafin Power Poll.

Most people also believe that Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker will run for president in four years, as noted with just over 50 percent saying he will run, 24.82 percent saying they are unsure, and the rest believing Pritzker should focus more on solving Illinois’ problems rather than pursuing his personal political ambitions.

The poll includes results on how respondents believe Chicago and Mayor Brandon Johnson should address the city’s budget deficit, and the attraction that Chicago has as a tourist destinationt his holiday season.
