Officials host bottled water donation drive to help residents of Jackson, Mississippi, Saturday Sept. 3, 6 AM to 6 PM

State Rep. Cyril Nichols, State Sen. Elect Willie Preston, and 18th Ward Alderman Derrick Curtis are hosting a daylong public water collection event to distribute bottled water to residents of Jackson, Mississippi where the water system has collapsed.

Water system issues have resulted in a crisis in the city of Jackson, Mississippi. Many residents of Jackson have gone weeks without any water.

Nichols, Preston and Curtis said they are asking residents to donate bottled water on Saturday, September 3 between 6 am and 6 pm. The bottled water will be shipped directly to a location in Jackson coordinated with the city’s mayor there.

“Our goal is to collect at least 1,500 cases of bottled water, 18 palettes, to ship down to Jackson to help the people there,” Nichols said.

“Water is so important to life and living and we just can’t turn our backs on their need. Mississippi is only a few states away and we feel it’s important to do what we can to help. I know that this is being hastily organized but the residents there are in dire and desperate situations and in great need. I know the people of Chicagoland will come through.”

Nichols said the collection location or drop-of point for the bottled water is the parking lot of Transformation Church located at 7711 S. Kedzie in Chicago between 6 am and 6 PM on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022. The water will be shipped to Jackson to be distributed to residents on Monday.

The destination location for the distribution of the bottled water is the New Horizon Ministry, 1750 Elis Avenue, Suite 200, in Jackson. Nichols will travel with the bottled water to meet Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and State Rep. Ronnie Crudup, Jr.

The meeting will be at the New Horizon Ministry.
