No injuries, minor damage at Life Time Fitness fire in Orland Park
The Orland Fire District responded to Life Time Fitness, 16333 LaGrange Road at 7:18 pm for an automatic fire alarm from the property on Friday evening April 16, 2021.
Upon arrival, evacuation was in progress. Fire crews entered the building to investigate the source of the alarm. Crews found smoke in the rear of the building near the men and women’s locker room.
While searching for the source of the smoke, crews began to pull ceiling in the locker rooms. Fire companies found active fire burning above the drop ceiling.
The fire was extinguished with handlines from fire apparatus.
The fire had been burning in the void space between the drop ceiling and the second floor. This area was above the sprinklers and smoke detectors. An air handling smoke detector activated to alert the fire department that there was smoke in the building.
The alarm was upgraded to a box alarm due to the size of the building and the amount the smoke that needed to be removed throughout the structure. Extensive overhaul was performed by fire companies on the scene to make sure that the fire did not extend into the second floor of the facility. The cause of the fire was a result of lint build up from their dryers that had spread up into the ceiling space.
Orland Fire was assisted by our neighbors from Mokena Fire, Palos Fire, Lockport Fire, Frankfort Fire, Country Club Hills Fire, and New Lenox Fire, while other mutual aid fire departments filled in at our fire stations and ran other calls for service. The business is closed until repairs can be made.
