Harper to host Community Health Fair to on trauma and gun violence
Community residents will have the chance to learn how to respond to incidents of gun violence and assist trauma victims during a Community Health Fair that state Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, will host on Saturday, March 23.
“For our community, we have to be better trained to help our neighbors at any given time,” said Harper. “My goal is to provide an introductory education on how to potentially save someone’s life during a violent crime while waiting for emergency services to arrive.”
To better assist victims of trauma, Harper is continuing her efforts to educate neighborhoods on how to help someone in need and take better care of neighborhood residents during a crisis. Harper’s event will take place on Saturday, March 23 from noon until 4 p.m. at the Port Ministries Church located at 5013 S. Hermitage Ave. Vendors such as the Chicago Torture Justice Center, which serves people who have been impacted by police violence, will also be in attendance to help residents understand and recover from traumatic incidents in the community.
“The center is there to open the door and bring other survivors in, to learn from our fight and learn how to win,” said Anthony Holmes, a torture survivor who received healing and wellness resources through the Chicago Torture Justice Center.
“Violence plagues our community, and it’s my goal as state Representative to provide tools and resources to those affected to help them handle these events,” said Harper. “It will take collective action to address the continued violence we face on the South Side, and involving community members at the ground level is an important step.”
