Maria Pappas honored by Chicago’s oldest Polish Daily newspaper

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas to receive the Polish Daily News “Dziennik Zwiazkowy” 2021 Person of the Year award on March 23, 2022

On March 23, 2022, Maria Pappas, Cook County Treasurer, in recognition of her long-standing service to the residents of Cook County and the kindness and support she shows to the Polish community will receive the prestigious title of Polish Daily News – Dziennik Zwiazkowy 2021 Person of the Year.

The award will be presented at the gala event hosted by the Polish Daily News on March 23, 2022 at 6PM at Allegra Banquets located at 5035 N River Road, Schiller Park, IL 60176.

Maria Pappas is the embodiment of the ideal public servant. Since 1998, when she was first elected Treasurer of Cook County, she has modernized the office, made it transparent, streamlined its operations and implemented strict fiscal rules resulting in 21 consecutive budgets that have either met or gone below the targeted figure.

Maria Pappas is beloved by multiple ethnic groups of Cook County. She spearheaded the creation of outreach materials available in 27 languages, while the Treasurer’s website can be easily translated into whopping 108 foreign languages.

Maria Pappas is a frequent guest of events, festivals, functions and meetings hosted by Chicago’s numerous ethnic groups. She is always present at major Polish events in Chicago ranging from the Pulaski Day celebration at the Polish Museum of America to the May 3 Constitution Day Parade.

 

Over the years, Maria Pappas has been recognized by the Polish community. Most recently, she was given the title of 2019 Friend of Polonia by the Polish Parade Committee, she also was the winner of 2019 edition in the Friend of Polonia special category by the committee for the Outstanding Pole Abroad contest hosted by the Consul General of the Republic of Poland, and was made an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Polish American Congress – IL Division.

Polish Daily News – Dziennik Związkowy is the oldest and the largest Polish language newspaper in Chicago. It is also the only Polish daily newspaper printed anywhere outside of Poland and the oldest continuously printed Polish language newspaper in the world.

The first edition of “Dziennik Związkowy” came out on January 15, 1908. It is a leading Polish language publication In Chicago reaching several thousand households every week.
