Video: Sandburg inducts National Honor Society students

Carl Sandburg High school inducted 87 Juniors and Seniors into the National Honor Society at ceremonies on Tuesday Oct. 24, 2017 at Sandburg High school at 131st Street and LaGrange Road in the Performing Arts Center.

The program included remarks presented by Caroline Aurelio, NHS co-President, Principal Deborah Baker, Supt. of Schools Dr. James M. Gay, with support from District 230 Board members including President Richard Nogal, Melissa Gracias, and Tony Serratore.

The induction included speeches and the traditional NHS Lighting of the Candle Ceremony including comments addressing the symbolism of each of the five danles, by Michael Stevens on History, Caroline Aurelio on Leadership, Samantha Warchol on Service, Ryan O’Neall on Scholarship and Elise Calzaretta on Character.

Presentation of the student candidates was made by Ga Hyun Kang, and Madeline Cosler.

Parents watched from the audience as their children were escorted one at a time to receive the National Honor Society Pin and to sign their names in the National Honor Society Roster for 2017.

Criteria for Admission and Membership

Criteria for admission and continued membership in National Honor Society is based upon demonstration of the Four Pillars of Academics, Character, Leadership and Service.  The following criteria is reviewed to assist the Faculty Council in determining eligibility and participation in NHS.

Any infraction of Character Requirements related to Induction or Membership Criteria may be reviewed by the Faculty Council.  The Faculty Council will make a recommendation to the School Principal for a student’s induction, retention, probation, or removal from the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society.  The Principal will utilize the recommendations from the Faculty Council to make the final determination of a student’s induction or status in the National Honor Society.
