Passing it on

Chicago hikes water rate, Bridgeview does, too

By Steve Metsch

The Village of Bridgeview is being charged more by Chicago for water, so it is passing that increase on to residents and businesses.

“Every year, we get a boost in our charge from Chicago, and we’re just passing that on,” Trustee Michael Pticek said. “At this time, it’s 1.5 percent.”

Pticek was sitting in for Mayor Steve Landek, who was in Springfield for state senator duties.

The village board by a 5-0 vote – trustee James Cecott did not attend the April 21 matinee meeting – approved increasing the water rate by 1.5 percent.

Effective June 1, the water rate will be $9.09 per 1,0000 gallons up to 500,000 gallons.

The water rate will be $7.39 per gallon from 500,000 to 1 million gallons, and $6.05 per gallon in excess of 1 million gallons.

The minimum charge for water will be $27.27 per month per dwelling or unit.

The board also by a 5-0 vote approved increasing the sewer rate, effective June 1.

The rate will be $1.83 per 1,000 gallons for the first 2,000 gallons, and $1.13 per gallon in excess of 2,000 gallons.

The minimum charge will be $3.66 per month per dwelling or commercial unit.

The board meeting was a quick one – even by Bridgeview standards – lasting just over four minutes. There were three agenda items.

After the meeting, Trustee Claudette Struzik said the board had no choice but to pass along the water rate price hike.

“Every suburb is going to pass it on,” she said. “You can’t absorb (the extra cost). What are you going to do?”

In other business, the board approved supporting a Class 7A assessment status for property at 8339-49 S. Harlem Ave.

That moves to Cook County for its approval because it involves property taxes, Struzik said.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 5.
